Buds for Vets is on a mission to make medical cannabis affordable and accessible to veterans with qualifying disabilities. The Florida non-profit uses social media and word of mouth to make this happen.
Today, 33 states have legalized the use of medical cannabis with the recommendation from a doctor. Patients must apply for a card within their state before being able to purchase their medical cannabis.
Alex Popoff, Marketing Director for Buds for Vets, said it is a shame that current standing laws require patients to obtain documentation and pay fees to the state to be treated.
“You don’t need an opioid card, an ibuprofen card or a caregiver card to give “meth-in-a-pill” Adderall to your child every day,” Popoff said. “I’m sorry. This is disgusting.”
Popoff said Buds for Vets is teaming up with providers around the state to help veterans obtain a medical cannabis card recommendation free of charge.
“They will still have to pay the $75 fee to the state,” Popoff said. “But we are keeping the pressure on the politicians and lawmakers to do away with the state fee for our disabled veterans and other disabled patients.”
Florida Governor, Ron DeSantis, signed SB 182 in mid-March this year, which repealed the smokable cannabis law that existed in the state. This allows patients to have more access to different forms of medication.
“The laws are changing, but we still need a way to educate more people,” Popoff said.
Patients interested in learning more about medical cannabis as a form of medication should consult their doctor to obtain more information and to get their recommendation.
Qualifying conditions for medical cannabis can be found on the Florida Department of Health website at http://flhealthsource.gov/ommu/medical_marijuana.
