Cape Coral, Florida - Wolfhounds Legacy continues to save two lives by rescuing dogs from kill shelters and turning them into service dogs for veterans. Today, they are on a new mission to find a new permanent home for the organization.
Faye Keller, the founder of Wolfhounds Legacy started the organization in 2016 and will be graduating their 3rd class of dogs and veterans in September of this year.
“The classes are growing and we have dogs that go into foster homes while they wait for their veterans,” Keller said. “We need a facility to house the dogs and a more comfortable environment to work in.”
The training is currently held at two locations in Cape Coral - Mike Greenwell's Bat-A-Ball & Family Fun Park and the Southwest Florida Military Museum. Keller said it is very important for them to find a location soon.
“With a facility, we plan to house dogs if a veteran has to go into the hospital for any procedures or if there are any circumstances they can’t take the dog with them,” Keller said. “We want to be able to offer this atmosphere of peace.”
In many cases, the dogs bond with their veterans quickly and go home with them during training.
“It feels weird not having him near me now,” said veteran Pablo Pabon referring to his service dog, Redd. “I’ve only been in the program for a few months and I already have a strong connection with him.”
“Training does take a long time, but we have dogs that go quick to their handlers,” said Keller. “I would love to be able to see us have a nice facility where we can welcome veterans from out of town in.”
Keller said they want to offer their services to veterans beyond Florida’s borders.
“We have had a few veterans outside of Florida, but we are limited because we lack a permanent home,” Keller said.
