Wolfhounds Legacy is continuing their efforts of rescuing dogs from high kill shelters, backyard breeders and owner-surrenders to train them to become service animals for veterans. Faye Keller, founder of Wolfhounds Legacy, said the organization has rescued three German Shepherds earlier this year from a backyard breeder in Miami and have helped turn their life into something with more meaning.
"We picked them up in January and they were taken straight to the vet where we began getting them on a road to recovery," Keller said. "We picked up two males and a female that were being used for interbreeding."

Keller said they travel as far as Texas conducting these missions on nearly a monthly basis. Melanie Jacob keeps track and fosters many of the dogs that come through the program.
“Last year, we brought in seventeen dogs from rescues and they have all been paid up with veterans.” Jacob said. “Two of the dogs we got from Miami this year are starting classes with their veteran soon. One was unable to go through the training because of his health so he was adopted and living a good life.”
Sometimes the dogs that are rescued are not suitable to be trained as service dogs, Keller said. She added that Wolfhounds Legacy does their best to rehabilitate each dog that comes through, but some experience health issues such as hip dysplasia or physical problems that inhibit their ability to perform.
“Each dog has to be able to perform tasks without limitations,” Keller said. “Unfortunately, we do get dogs that were abused or neglected to a point they cannot go through training. These dogs do get adopted by families that go on to take care of them and give them a great life.”
